At Kempshott Under Fives we enjoy taking the time to get to know your child, their likes, dislikes, interests, stages of development and needs. We regularly come together as a team to talk about the children and plan our activities.

Here is a little insight into how we plan for your children:

1. We ask for as much information as possible about your little one before they start. This is given through our various interactions with you, whether it is by telephone, email, your setting visits or home visits. We also ask for an 'All About Me' pack to be completed and returned on their first day where you can write as much as you like.

2. We spend the first couple of weeks settling your child into the preschool and seeing which member of staff your child forms a natural bond with. We then allocate a Key Carer to your child based on our observations.

3. Each member of staff (who can be referred to as a 'Key Carer' for your child or Early Years Practitioner) is issued with a small notebook to write down important things your child may say or do. This helps us to build a picture on how your child learns and what they like to do.

4. We use an online journal system called 'Tapestry' to record observations of your child. We use Kindle tablets to take photographs during the day, write captions explaining what had happened and link this to the EYFS which will provide you with an understanding of the stage of development your little one is at in relation to the Early Years Foundation Stage. Every parent has access to Tapestry to view the photographs and observations about their child’s learning journey.

5. Staff meet once a week to talk about our individual children and how we can plan for them during the week. A little one can count to 2...how can we encourage them to count to 4? Do they enjoy playing with the cars or building with the blocks?

6. We discuss your individual children during our staff training days too so we can ensure they are being offered play opportunities that match their interests. Our play provision may be simplified or enhanced depending upon your child's abilities. We understand that whilst two children may be the same age they can learn differently.

7. Children may have a Special Educational Need and this is always taken into account during our planning. Opportunities are provided for all children at a level which they will understand and enjoy. We take time to get to know your little one, building a relationship with them for a good understanding of what makes them inspired, creative, confident and ready to learn through play.
